Visual binary stars with known orbits in <i>Gaia</i> EDR3

ABSTRACT A total of 3350 objects from the Sixth Catalog Orbits Visual Binary Stars (ORB6) are investigated to validate Gaia Early Data Release 3 (EDR3) parallaxes and provide mass estimates for systems. We show that two-thirds binaries with a separation 0.2–0.5 arcsec left without parallax solution in EDR3. Special attention is paid 521 pairs known separately each component. find 16 entries deemed be chance alignments unrelated stars. First we examples high-confidence binary systems significant differences reported their components. Next conclude EDR3 errors underestimated, by at least factor 3, sources large renormalized unit-weight error (RUWE). Parallaxes needed estimate stellar masses. Because nearly 30 per cent ORB6 lack 5- or 6-parameter EDR3, attempt enrich astrometric data. Distant companions revealed analysis proper motions Hipparcos parallaxes.
